Entry to Canada

Goods & Services Tax (GST) and Visitors Rebate

  • The goods and services tax (GST) is a seven per cent tax charged on most goods and services sold or provided in Canada.
  • As a visitor to Canada, you will pay the tax on most purchases. Under the visitor rebate program, you may apply for a refund of the tax paid on goods you take home and on accommodations in Canada, provided it is less than one month per lodging establishment.

Currency

  • Canadian currency looks similar to European currency.
  • Conversion rate: the $1.00 U.S. dollar converts to approximately $1.50 Canadian dollars.

Language

  • English and French are Canada's two official languages
  • English is the predominant language in all provinces except Quebec

Electricity

  • Electricity in Canada is 110V and the plugs are the same as in the U.S. If you come from a country that uses 220V electricity, it is advised to bring a converter
