- Montreal is the largest city in Quebec and the second
largest in Canada.
It is the second largest French speaking city in the world and North Americas
largest inland port.
- Montreal is one of two large islands in the St. Lawrence
River (the other, Île Jésus, includes Laval and several other communities) and its
highest point, Mount Royal, is 761 ft/ 232m high.
- Montreal is infamous for its many cobblestone streets and
coffee house culture
It is home to Expo 67, Montreals World Fair and the legendary Notre Dame
Basilica.
- Montreal annually hosts the Canadian Grand Prix in June and
the International Jazz Festival in July.
Weather
- Montreal's climate varies dramatically over the year. The
city is known for its cold winters, but its summers are hot and generally sunny, with
occasional muggy day. Average temperatures vary from 10-25F (-13C-5C) in January to 65-80F
(18C-27C) in July.
Taxes
- Most goods and services in Quebec are subject to two taxes,
a federal Goods and Services Tax of 7% (GST, usually listed as TPS on receipts) and a
provincial sales tax of 7.5% (TVQ on receipts).
Other taxes include: 10% alcohol tax; 15% hotel tax; 15% gratuity tax.

- Montreal is in the Eastern time zone of North America, 4 hours behind Greenwich
Mean Time (GMT) during the summer (Eastern Daylight, EDT) and 5 hours during

Language
- Montreal is a cosmopolitan city. Quebec's official first
language is French, second is English.
